Introduction
The task we've been assigned now is to make a music video since we've never done it before. This task is supposed to help us understand the process of how a professional music video is made and we'll try to implement all the codes and conventions as well as the professional techniques that are used by filmmakers.
The genre we've chosen is Indie rock. The entire process will be showcased on this blog, from the storyboard to the production process.
About My Preliminary Video
I'm going to be making a narrative type video. In which I'll be trying to convey a story. It will have a beginning, a middle and an end. The story will be an alternative interpretation. I feel like this is where a film maker can really shine because they can tell a story in the genre and cinematography of their choosing, without adhering to the rules of storytelling.
Selection of Song
We as a team have agreed upon Sajna by Yashal Shahid. The lyrics of this song can be categorized as heart broken and deep.Since our storyline for the music video will be regarding breakup and financial issue this song went perfectly with it. This song is basically for the people who faced breakup and the lyrics are extremley sad as someone is dodged.
Inspired breakup songs are Nazdekiyan by Shuja Haider, Maan hota hai by Atif Aslam, The Breakup song by Aag and many more
Finalising the music video genre
The genre for our Music video is Indie Rock/Pop.
Music genre is a category or type belonging to a shared tradition or a set of conventions. Music id divided in different genre like pop, rock, hip hop etc. Though there are a variety of genres but this classification is often subjective and sometimes genres overlap each other.
Pop:
Pop is a genre of popular music that originated in its modern form during the mid- 1950s in the United States and the United Kingdom. A pop music is deliberately flexible. it accommodates the fact that the specific music identified as pop is continually changing.
Indie Rock:
Indie rock is a genre of rock music that originated in the United States and United Kingdom in the 1970s. The music is recognized by alternative rock or guitar pop. Indie Rock has subgenres sadcore, noise pop, indie metal etc
Sadcore is a subgenre of indie rock characterised by bleak lyrics, downbeat melodies and slower tempos, or alternatively, songs with deceivingly upbeat melodies that are simultaneously characterised by depressive lyrical undertones or imagery. It is a loose definition and does not describe a specific movement, group or scene. It is categorised by All Music's reference guide as music for the depressed. Sadcore is sometimes considered synonymous with the term slowcore, and both share the distinction of often being dismissed as a label by the bands they would describe.
Music genre is very important and it could be very well noticed that the genre is the first label placed on the band. Most importantly it is used to target a specific audience and most of all it would be easy for both the maker and the viewer to easily categorized their work.

Codes and Convention
General codes and conventions Mise En Scene Editing Camera Props to help tell story. Make-up to match the theme. Lighting to enhance mood of song. Colours to represent mood/ theme of song. Cinematic effects and filters are often used to make the music video feel like a mini movie. A lot of speed changes are used (usually slow to create a sense of time running out) Extreme close ups to show artists/actors to represent emotion of song through facial expression. Many establishing shots are used on the performance of the whole band. A typical indie rock music video, like most music videos, are about image. Whether it’s about the artist with a particular look or the whole video as a whole eg. A certain theme running through it. It is common for the image of the artist and the theme of the video to relate to enhance the overall product. Indie rock bands and any other type of rock band would usually use a lot of performance in their music videos and less narrative because a lot of these artists play music for themselves and not the industry.
Performance For indie rock bands, performance is a key element in their music videos to show off their energy or passion to attract an audience to their live shows. Only very few music videos are only of performance and vice versa, but usually a typical indie rock music video would have both a performance and narrative element.
Narratives in indie rock videos are usually deeper than that of pop videos due to the artist’s song writing. Indie rock videos tend to have a cinematic feel depending on budget so it would get more online views to make more money.
Identifying primary and secondary audience
Primary audience is the "main body" of viewers -- the average, also known as target audience. Secondary audience is viewers who fall outside the primary demographic, but may exert an external influence on primary audiences.
The primary target of a music video would be the people who are most directly involved with it. For example, for our music video, it would be certain people interested in music and music videos, most likely people at a age group of around (13-35).
Whereas, the secondary audience would most likely attract viewers due to a relationship with the target audience or the subject covered in the music video. Examples would include; people looking for inspiration or evaluation of the music video, peers doing the similar task, it might also include friends and family of a viewer,
Audience Profiling: Demographics and Psychographics of audiences
A demographic profile is a term used in marketing and broadcasting, to describe a demographic grouping or a market segment. This typically involves age bands, social class, and gender. In the film and media industry, producers shape their media text or product around the demographics of a potential audience, suiting their needs and attempting to attract the most number of viewings/ ratings as possible.
The demographic segment for our particular genre- Indie Rock is,
- It attracts both male and female audiences since the genre does not make a reference to a particular feature of either gender
- This genre is mostly aimed at 15-21 year olds that attend higher education or university. This is because they connect with the indie genre due to being a very independent age.
- The occupations for this audience would be parties, hanging out with their friends, not following a crowd and doing their own thing independently.
On the other hand, Psychographics is the study of personality, values, opinions, attitudes, interests, and lifestyles, they can be contrasted with demographic variables (such as age and gender), behavioral variables (such as loyalty).
Psychographics can also be seen as an equivalent of the concept of "culture" when it is used for segmentation at a national level. In terms for Indie rock genre psychographic segment is,
- lifestyle could again be linked to the social class mentioned in demographic profile
- personality, attitudes and interests are inter-related characteristics of a viewer that is on a more general level, steady, solid, aesthetic and mature.
Lyrics and meaning
Tere Dhokhe Ne Sajjna,
Mainu Maar Mukaya,
Your betrayal has put me to death, O dear.
Main Mar Te Gayi Aan,
Fer Saah Kyun Ae Aaya,
Since I have died already, Why am I still breathing.
Jag Nu Rawaaya,
Mainu Tainu Hasaaya,
Not bothering a bit about the world, I made you smile instead.
Phir Vi Palle Kujh Naiyo Aaya,
But still I have got nothing in return.
Teri Yaadan Sahare,
Main Jee Te Lawangi,
I could live with your memories;
Ae Zehar Judayi Da Pee Te Lawangi,
And suffer this painful truth of being away from you.
Ik Gham Tu Si Dita,
Sau Gham Aap Paale,
You gave me a grief, and but I suffered from hundreds later.
Sab Kita Si Apna Tere Hawaale,
I gave you everything that ever belonged to me.
Hun Raatan Nu Yaadan Di Chhawein Behke,
Main Tasbi Karaan Tera Naam Laike,
Now sitting alone in the dark nights, I chant your name with the rosary beads.
Thak Gayi Aan Sare Main Dukhde Sehke,
I am tired of these sufferings;
Aawenga Mudke Gaya Si Tu Kehke,
You told me that you will come back.
Meri Banjar Akhiyan Ch Saawan Lawaaya,
You have put my eyes to shed tears.
(brought springs in the devastated land of my eyes).
Te Main Hanjuan Di Baarish Ch Pyaar Bahaaya,
And in the rain of tears, I shed love for you.
Teray Dhokhay Nay Sajna Mainoo Maar Mukaya,
Your betrayal has killed (or finished) me for good.
Main Mar Te Gayi Aa Phir Saah Kyun Ae Aaya,
Since I am dead already, why do I still seem to be breathing?
Basic Storyline Idea
The music video Starts with the male protagonist sitting on the balcony sad and upset with pieces of broken glass and cigarette buds around him.
Then there will be a scene where he will be dressed up looking at the mirror as his mother walks in through the door holding an empty wallet looking angry and throws the wallet at him. He then picks up the wallet and walks out the door.
Then there will be a scene where he will be sitting on a desk working and he sees the female protagonist (his ex girlfriend) walking in the showroom (where the male protagonist works) with another man.
The male protagonist will approach both of them and throw this time there will be flashbacks shown of the male protagonist and female protagonist sitting on a bike talking, laughing and drinking.
Then he will approach both of them and as he will be talking to the side actor he will keep his eyes on the girl and then slowly approaches her. she pushes him away, and the side actor immediately comes in action holding the collar of the male protagonist as they both are in a fight the male protagonists boss walks in and kicks the male protagonist out of the showroom.
Then the scene will come where the male protagonist will be sitting on the edge of a construction building smoking and then he jumps from the building and commits suicide.
This was the storyline I wrote in the start and after filming and editing the music video according to this storyline I felt like there was a need of slight changing in the storyline and addition of a few scenes these changes and addition of scenes was done in the final edit of the music video.

Shooting Schedule
The overall experience was quite interesting as well as intense. It took really long for us to shoot the shortest scenes as it was our first attempt. But still we tried to keep our cool throughout the process and made sure that we don't get under pressure. The process was really fascinating and I got to learn a lot.
Software
Adobe Premiere Pro
We chose Adobe Premiere Pro to edit our video as it is widely used by professionals to edit real media texts. Adobe Premiere Pro is a timeline-based video editing app developed by Adobe Systems and published as part of the Adobe Creative Cloud licensing program.
Analysis
The music video we created was based on the song ‘Sajna’ by the infamous singer/songwriter ‘Yashal Shahid’. The genre of the song is Indie rock. The video is narrative based with a non-linear storyline.
We tried to create a relationship between the audio and the visuals and we kept the storyline non-linear in order to invoke a sense of amusement. There are four characters in the entire video but the story is biased on one main male protagonist . The theme of the video revolves around the breakup of a couple, financial struggle and feelings of the male character. Lowkey lighting was mostly used through out the video to add a dramatic effect. The transitions throughout the video make it flow smoothly from one scene to another.
