Final music video task

After our preliminary music video we had to film another music video which will be our final one. I am really excited to film this one as I feel like after the first one I have a good understanding of music videos and how to record and film them.

Selection of the song

Before selecting the song we choose our social issue. The social issue was women abuse so we decided to choose a song that went with our song. After going through a couple of songs we came across the song BEKHAUFF and just by listening to it we knew that this will be perfect for our social issue.

Artist: Sona Mohapatra

Album: Satyamev Jayate 2

Song: Bekhauff

Genre: Indie Rock

Released: 2014

Finalising the music video genre

The genre for our final Music video is the same as the preliminary music video which is INDIE ROCK. It is genre of music and cult following of younger generation which is striving to be different from pop music followers. Music is often “underground”, not known to popular audiences because of independent record labels. It was originated in the United States and United Kingdom in the 1970s.

The subgenre will be sad core and motivational.

Sadcore is characterised by bleak lyrics, downbeat melodies and slower tempos, or alternatively, songs with deceivingly upbeat melodies that are simultaneously characterised by depressive lyrical undertones or imagery. It is a loose definition and does not describe a specific movement, group or scene. It is categorised by All Music's reference guide as music for the depressed. Sadcore is sometimes considered synonymous with the term slowcore, and both share the distinction of often being dismissed as a label by the bands they would describe.

Motivational music's main elements are the Chord progression, the rhythm structure, the melody line and finally the Instrumentation. A good motivational music is something elevates a person's feeling basically from sadness to happiness. It is when a person can relate to the song lyrics and get inspired by them. It also changes from person to person ones motivational music may not work for others.

Codes and Conventions

General codes and conventions Mise En Scene Editing Camera Props to help tell story. Make-up to match the theme. Lighting to enhance mood of song. Colours to represent mood/ theme of song. Cinematic effects and filters are often used to make the music video feel like a mini movie. A lot of speed changes are used (usually slow to create a sense of time running out) Extreme close ups to show artists/actors to represent emotion of song through facial expression. Many establishing shots are used on the performance of the whole band. A typical indie rock music video, like most music videos, are about image. Whether it’s about the artist with a particular look or the whole video as a whole eg. A certain theme running through it. It is common for the image of the artist and the theme of the video to relate to enhance the overall product. Indie rock bands and any other type of rock band would usually use a lot of performance in their music videos and less narrative because a lot of these artists play music for themselves and not the industry.

Performance For indie rock bands, performance is a key element in their music videos to show off their energy or passion to attract an audience to their live shows. Only very few music videos are only of performance and vice versa, but usually a typical indie rock music video would have both a performance and narrative element.

Narratives in indie rock videos are usually deeper than that of pop videos due to the artist’s song writing. Indie rock videos tend to have a cinematic feel depending on budget so it would get more online views to make more money.

Lyrics with Translation

Deewarein oonchi hai, galiyaan hai tang

Lambi dagar hai par himmat hai sang

Paanv pe chhaale hain, saansein buland

Ladne chali hoon azadi ki jung

The walls are high and streets are narrow,

the path is long but I've courage with me,

There are blisters on my feet, (but) breaths are high [as in, my morale is high]

I've started to fight the fight of freedom.

Bekhauf aazaad hai jeena mujhe

Bekhauf aazaad hai rehna mujhe

I've to live fearless, free.

I've to live fearless, free.

Reeti ki zanjeerein kha gayi zang

Nyaay ke mandir bhi ho gaye bhang

Zamaana chale na chale mere sang

Bolungi halla, aawaz dabangg

The chains of traditions have been rusted,

and even the temples of justice have been broken.

whether the world moves with me or not,

I'll launch an attack, in a loud voice.

Bekhauf azaad hai kehna mujhe

Bekhauff azaad hai rehna mujhe

I've to speak out fearless and free.

I've to live fearless, free.

Chotein jism par marham umang

Laash nahi hoon mann zinda patang

Dil mein ummeedein aur khushiyon ke rang

Har aansoo banega ik nayi tarang

There are wounds on my body, and enthusiasm is the ointment,

I am not a corpse, (instead) my heart is a living (flying) kite,

There are hopes in my heart and colors of joys,

every tear will become a new wave (of happiness)..

Haan.. bekhauf azaad hai behna hai mujhe

Bekhauff azaad hai rehna mujhe

Yeah, I've to flow, free and fearless.

I've to live free and fearless.

Deewarein unchi hain, galiyaan hain tang

Lambi dagar hai par himmat hai sang

Paaon pe chhaale hain, saansein buland

Ladne chali hoon aazaadi ki jung

Bekhof azaad hai jeena mujhe

Bekhoff azad hai rehna mujhe

Storyline

The basic idea that I had in my mind was that I wanted to show how the female character is going through abuse in her marriage and how in the end she gets enough courage to stand up for herself and stop her husband from hitting her.

The storyline
The starting scene will start of my the husband walking in and screaming at the female protagonist. After that she calls her dad and tells him she cannot continue the marriage but her dad tells her that she has to.
The scene then cuts to her walking in a street. Use of mid shots and wide shots
Then we can see her packing her bag.
There is performance of another female character singing the song
There will be a scene where the women will be pressing the husbands shirt and accidently burns it the husband walks in and see his burnt shit he slap the female character
Then the scene cuts to her being in the washroom crying and putting a ointment on her bruise
After that there will be a performance clip
Then there will a clip of her picking her bag and walking out but the husband tries to stop her and slaps her she stops the slap by holding his hand and pushing him away as she walks out

This was my initial draft of the storyline after shooting all these shots and compiling them together I made changes in the story line by adding more scenes and cutting some scenes.

Story board
 Medium Shot
The medium shot is used to reveal more details on the subject, capturing them from the waist up. As it includes the subject’s hands and part of their surroundings, it’s the best way to capture actions in detail, while maintaining a general view. This is why the medium shot is one of the most popular types of shots.
This shot is when the female character is walking through the street while covering her face.

Wide Shot
A wide shot also called a long or full shot is a shot that shows the subject within their surroundings.
In this shot the female protagonist is packing her bag.

Close-up Shot
A close-up shot tightly frames the subject’s face in order to focus on their emotions. These types of shots are great to connect with the audience, as there are no elements distracting them from the subject’s gestures and reactions.
In this shot the women is shown sitting in a dark room while hands are coming on her face and cover her face in red, the red color indicates violence.

Two Shot
A two shot is a shot that shows two subjects in the same frame. Filmmakers use the two shot to show the emotions and reactions of two people in a scene
This shot shows the male protagonist is abusing the female protagonist.

Two Shot
The idea of this is that the women is trying to speak and make herself free from the  male protagonist who beats her and he is not letting her speak or move out of his house.

Two Shot
In this scene the female protagonist is defending herself from the male protagonist. She finally takes a  stand to defend herself by holding the husbands and pushing him away as he tries to slap her.

Wide Shot:
The last scene is from Aurat march which is a movement to empower women.
